Blain Clegg has never left his quaint town of Cobham. Trapped in a crushing job he despises and the youngest boy of four, he knows he’s not destined for anything spectacular and that the family business will eventually pass to his eldest brother. Thus, he’s inspired by his grandfather: an aging, decorated war hero and a drunkard who tells all kinds of tales. Although many of the other townsfolk see Grandpa Clegg as a rambling drunk and put no stake in many of his tales, Blain yearns for similar adventures.
When Grandpa Clegg realizes he’s dying, he passes his sword down to Blain and trains him in the use of it. Unbeknownst to Blain his skills will be needed when he’s recruited by a Captain of the Imperial Legion and sent off to war against the Undead after the assassination of an important political figure. Not wanting to go alone, he convinces his best friend to join the legion as well. Together, they find an adventure Blain always wanted: yet what they go through together turns out nothing like they’d expected.
As Blain endures grueling training, pompous and cold instructors, hard marches, long days, and also witnesses deeds more horrible than any he’d imaged, he learns valuable life lessons and matures. With tremendous obstacles in front of him and good and evil colliding on a massive scale, what role will Blain Clegg play and can his training keep him alive?
