Backcover Description: Born to sharecroppers in Wedowee, Alabama in 1918, he was a poor, insecure, shy little boy with a stuttering problem, who by his early teens had become a professional gambler. It was a way to survive. People sneered at him when they passed him on the street. He was one of the Pitts boys who would never amount to anything. His mother couldn’t read or write and his dad had a drinking problem. One evening he and some of his “friends” went into a Baptist Church in Dadeville, Alabama on a dare. He went for the purpose of disrupting the revival service that was in progress. For the first time he heard about God and God’s love for him. When the invitation was given he went forward and accepted Christ. All of his friends followed. What started out to be a disruption of the church service totally disrupted my dad’s life. He became a Christian and his life and those of countless others was forever changed. He got his preacher’s license in 1948 and became an ordained elder in the Church of the Nazarene in 1956.
There are many wonderful Christian men, many devoted Christian Pastors but this one was special. He was my dad. I watched him live his life everyday. I saw his genuine commitment, his unwavering faith. It was as present when no one was looking as when he stood before his congregation.
No one has ever impacted my life like my dad, Roland Pitts. He was bigger than life itself to me. He had a huge heart, especially for the broken or disadvantaged. He was strong, yet compassionate. He was funny, yet serious about things that mattered. He was determined yet unselfish. Most of all he was a servant to God and his fellowman. This book is my account of his incredible journey “From Alabama to Heaven”. May it encourage you in your journey.
