Author Meeting Place Interviews Author Alicia Hendley of Guelph/Ontario/Canada
Bio: I am a 39-year-old writer and clinical psychologist, as well as a mother of four. I'm currently on maternity leave from my job at a university counselling clinic. My first novel, 'A Subtle Thing', was published this year by Five Rivers Chapmanry. A Subtle Thing tells the story of a young woman who attempts to navigate through life while experiencing recurrent major depressive episodes. The book I'm currently working on deals with bullying through the eyes of a "bystander". My training in psychology tends to colour the writing that I do.
How many book/s have you written?: One.
Please share with us your book titles: A Subtle Thing.
What genre/s would you like to write in?: Fiction (novels, short stories) and poetry.
Please share with us who or what encourages you to write and why?: Ever since I was a small child I have lived in the world of stories--both as a reader and as a writer. I grew up with a librarian mother and a professor father, so books were an integral part of my family's life. I would say that I'm motivated from within to write and start to feel ansy if I haven't been working on anything for a while.
How long did it take for you to write your book/s?: I wrote most of my published novel while on maternity leave with my third child. I'm currently revising a draft of a second novel, which I have been working on for about a year.
How long did it take for you to publish your book/s?: The publisher expressed interest in my book in October 2009 and it was published in July 2010.
Who did you publish with and why?: I published with Five Rivers Chapmanry, a small, independent Canadian press that had been recommended to me. I have always sent my manuscripts to smaller, independent publishing houses, as they tend to be the ones willing to take a first (and second)look at unpublished writers. In addition, I liked Five Rivers' commitment to getting the voices of new writers heard.
Please share with us how you prefer to market your book/s?: I am interested in various forms of marketing (e.g., radio, newspaper book review), with a particular focus upon web-based methods.
Please share with us any event/s that you have planned in marketing your book/s: My book ('A Subtle Thing') is on display today (Sept. 21) at the Humanities Theatre at the University of Waterloo, as part of their Friends of the Library lecture series.
The book launch for 'A Subtle Thing' will take place on Sunday Sept. 26th from 1-3 at Word on the Street in Queen's Park, Toronto (Booth 327).
I will be doing a book signing on Saturday, October 16th (1-4 pm) at Indigo Burlington in Burlington, Ontario.
Do you wish to share any additional information with our readers?: I believe that my book will appeal to readers who have ever known someone who has struggled with a mood disorder (e.g., self, family member, co-worker, friend).
