Author Meeting Place Interviews Author Tony Walker of Scottsdale, Arizona, USA.
Bio: English-born writer Tony Walker is the author of numerous articles, which have been printed in various shooting and collector magazines in the USA, the UK, Australia, and South Africa. He also wrote several sections of the book Military Collectibles, which was published by Salamander Press in the UK. In his varied career, he has, among other things, driven a bus, sold insurance, worked as an archivist looking after medieval documents, owned a gun store, and was a market trader in London, where he sold antiques (some of which were genuine), and military memorabilia. He was also heavily involved in the shooting sports, and has been a firearms instructor for more than thirty years. In addition, he ran defensive handgun classes in England at Delta Training, which was the premier shooting school in the UK. His students included military personnel, police, and even the occasional TV actor and actress, who needed to shoot and handle firearms in a realistic way for their roles. After moving from London to Arizona in 1993, he now lives in Arizona, where he runs a firearms school, SAS Training, with his wife Vannessa, who is also an experienced firearms instructor.
He has been a freelance writer for over twenty five years, and has now embarked on a career as a novelist. His first book in a planned series was titled Snides, and introduced John Pilgrim, British ex-SAS trooper and military antiques specialist, and Sally Brandon, feisty sharp shooting American investigative journalist. He is currently working on the third John and Sally Pilgrim novel, which is titled Pilgrim’s Luger. How many book/s have you written?: Three and a half (all published)
Please share with us your book titles: Military Collectibles (contributor and tech advisor) Snides (action thriller) How to Win a Gunfight (non-fiction) Pilgrim's Banner (action thriller)
What genre/s would you like to write in?: action/adventure
Please share with us who or what encourages you to write and why?: To quote Samuel Johnson, "Nobody but a blockhead ever wrote anything, except for money". So, my motivation in writing is to make a few bucks, quid, or whatever. Not that I expect to get rich, but so long as I cover my costs, and have enough left over to keep me in Gin and cigarettes, I'm reasonably happy.
I was encouraged to write many years ago by a teacher, who said I had a little talent (damning with faint praise?). I was also asked to write a series of articles for a collector magazine, which were published, which led me to writing articles that have been published in the USA, UK, Australia, and South Africa.
How long did it take for you to write your book/s?: Snides - six months writing, eighteen months editing and rewriting. How to Win a Gunfight - a year, with another three months in rewriting and editing. Pilgrim's Banner took two years to write and six months to edit.
How long did it take for you to publish your book/s?: Six weeks
Who did you publish with and why?: My first novel, Snides, was published by Llumina Press, but my subsequent books, How to Win a Gunfight and Pilgrim's Banner, were published by Infinity Publishing.
I like Infinity because they print in-house, and because they pay decent royalties.
Please share with us how you prefer to market your book/s?: I prefer to sell my book at my website, www.tonywalkerbooks.com, but I also seem to get decent sales via Amazon.com.
